Moog GAT supports school project in Eritrea

Schoolyard of Erdi-School in Melezanay, Eritrea

After Moog GAT was able to support the meanwhile successfully completed project “Clean drinking water for Melezanay”, the aim of which was to build a well and supply the inhabitants of the village of Melezanay with drinking water, this year we received information about a new community project with another essential topic: education.
We are very happy to support this project, too!

The Erdi School in the village of Melezanay in Eritrea has been in existence for around 50 years. Completely destroyed during the war of independence against Ethiopia and rebuilt in 1991, more than 700 pupils are currently enrolled at the school. In the few rooms available, the pupils of the 16 classes (grades 1 to 8) are taught in the mornings and afternoons. Attending a secondary school is currently not possible in Melezanay. At the moment, pupils have to rent a room in a village with a suitable school after the 8th grade because the poor infrastructure makes daily commuting impossible. Not all families are in a position to raise the financial means to do so, which means that, despite good grades, schooling ends after the 8th grade and employment as unskilled workers is sought in surrounding towns.

The currently atrocious conditions with leaking roofs, broken windows, mold and peeling plaster in the few existing rooms, which also lack furniture and teaching materials, are now to be remedied. The desired success of the school project, including the introduction of a secondary school offer, would not only mean access to education for pupils and parents, but also a common and future-oriented coexistence in Melezanay.

Further information about the Erdi School in Melezanay and how to make donations that are sure to arrive where they are needed can be found here.
