Design and Function

Rotocal is a patented sealing system for large shaft diameters. The purpose of the design was to lessen the heavily increasing friction and leakage losses with large shafts. Therefore, sliding shoes are used in the stationary part of the rotary union for carrying the medium, which only have a fraction of the circumference of the shaft, and are also hydrostatically released, in order to minimize the friction and wear. The shoes glide along a valve ring that is moistened with the medium. The valve ring sits on the shaft and turns with it. The valves that are in the area of the pressure chamber of the shoe are opened by the pressure of the medium, and transport the medium into the shaft. When the valves turn so that they are no longer in the pressure chamber, they close and thus prevent a loss of the medium through the valve ring.


With the Rotocal technology, it is also possible to lubricate locally, whereby the medium is only supplied to a specific section of the perimeter of the rotor. The shoe is arranged in a stationary fashion while the valve ring rotates. The medium is released through it, to the stationary piece, always in the same area along the perimeter of the shaft.
Applications

The areas of use for Rotocal are, e.g., in the building of specialized machinery, mining machinery, in hooking up couplers, or in adjusting propellers. The localized lubrication is useful for, e.g., tunneling machinery in order to settle the dust and avoid explosions.
Models

Rotocal systems are only manufactured according to customer specifications. By optimising the material selection, valve size, sliding shoe design, number of valves and shoes, the system can be adapted to the most varied operating and medium requirements.
