The new product innovation of the company GAT – ROTORAY, a fiber optical rotary union – very robust, highly efficient and highly precise

The fiber optical rotary union ROTORAY supports contactless high speed bi-directional data transmission between a stationary and a rotating part and offers many advantages: an extremely robust design, a very low insertion loss, which is insensitive to temperature changes and vibrations, and a data transmission rate up to 30 Gbit/s.

A new developed ultra precise alignment process and the innovative technology of positioning the optical components provide an excellent optical efficiency – basic requirements for contactless bidirectional high speed data transmission. The ROTORAY is available with single- and multi mode fiber. Typical applications of the ROTORAY are offshore, marine and energy sectors, but also in medical systems, wind turbines and security systems a fiber optical rotary union is needed.

GAT focus on innovation: ROTOCAP, the new capacitive slip ring for non-contacting high-speed transmission

The continuously increasing demand in many applications as wind power or offshore- and marine technology require high performance slip ring systems able to handle Gigabit data rates. The capacitive slip ring ROTOCAP designed by GAT facilitate uni- and bidirectional high-speed data transmission between rotating and stationary parts with up to Gigabit Ethernet rates. The data transmission is based on a non-contacting capacitive transfer technology. ROTOCAP is characterized by its very compact design and an extremely robustness, furthermore the slip ring is highly resistant against external interferences. The patented technology allows high-speed data transmission at extremely low bit error rates better than 10^-12.

The design of this capacitive slip ring is modular, thus allowing a simultaneous and bidirectional use of multiple channels. All standard DC-free protocols such as Fast Ethernet, Video or Fibre channel can be transmitted.

Other advantages of the ROTOCAP slip ring system are the compatibility with all standard transmission protocols, the possibility of integration into other slip ring systems and the combination with rotary joints for media. Even diameters up to 500 mm are available. Other applications of the capacitive slip ring are medical technology, automation industry as well as radar and surveillance systems.
